Gather your equipment

  • French press
  • Freshly roasted beans
  • Grinder (if your beans aren't ground)
  • Kettle
  • Timer
  • Spoon for stirring

Heat water

  • Bring fresh water to a boil, then wait 1 minute for it to cool slightly before starting.

Measure and grind coffee

  • Use 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio (25g coffee:375g water). So, if you are using a 1L French Press, you'll need around 70g coffee.
  • Grind beans on a medium grind setting. Because a French Press is an immersion brewer, it needs larger particles than espresso to ensure the coffee is well extracted.

Add coffee grinds to the french press

  • Add coffee inside the brewer and shake a little to level it out

Start the brew

  • Start timer
  • Pour all water in one go to saturate all the coffee
  • Allow to steep for 4 minutes, then stir
  • Scrape off any leftover crust that is on the surface of the brew.

Now Wait!

  • This might be hard as you have allowed brewed the coffee and it should be ready - but trust us!
  • Wait at least 4 minutes for the coffee grinds to settle and the temperature to cool
  • Then, gently press down the plunger
  • Pour into cups and enjoy.
